So here we are in Stroud, OK. Route 66 goes right through the middle of the town. It's called Main Street here and it's exactly what you would expect a Main Street to be. There is a cafe here that was around when Route 66 was popular...doesn't look like business is that good now. But today started with a parade down Main Street to kick off the Brick and Rolling Pin Festival. Apparently, there used to be a brick factory here and there is a Stroud in England that also had a brick factory and 50 years agao, they came up with this festival. A team threw bricks and a team threw them there and they compared results to come up with a winner. There are 2 other Strouds, one in Canada and one in Austarlia and years later, the Austrailian Stroud suggested adding a rolling pin throwing contest for women (they had a rolling pin factory). So that is how it came to be...not sure why you'd need to know all that, but there it is.

Here are some pictures from the parade. It was both the Brick and Rolling Pin Festival and the Pow Wow so it was a little of both in the parade. Of course, Andrew and Ally liked best the fact that everyone was throwing candy out--they left the parade with a bag full!

Andrew signed up and completed in the brick throwing contest. Here he is hurling it!! He did pretty good but didn't win. Oh well...I guess he hasn't practiced throwing bricks enough! The kids competition was anyone aged 12 and under and they had some really little ones throwing!!
Tonight we head to the Pow Wow and rodeo..looking forward to more fun!
Oh those Aussies!!!They really know how to liven up a brick throwing contest! Was Joey Chestnut there for the pie eating contest? Hope you took pictures of yourselves on Route 66. It is a part of American travel history and entertainment. When Daddy and I were young there was a show on TV about 2 guys and their adventures on Route 66. I think it also is in New Mexico or Arizona still. The song is great too.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I give Rob a lot of credit for the new skill he has mastered. I don't even want to pump my own gas if I don't have to.
How far did Andrew actually throw the brick? Did anyone say anything about him being from out of town? I'm sure you'll enjoy the rodeo. Please let me know Andrew DIDN'T try to ride the bull here like he did in Mexico.
Enjoy.
